Behind the Design: A Coastal Wedding on Peak’s Island

Megan & Alan were married on Peak’s Island, off the coast of Maine, in the summer of 2024. When Kelcey of K. Marie Events reached out to me for their day-of stationery, she presented me with their vision for a vintage New England yacht club style wedding. Inspired by some menus I had previously created, we drew upon this theme to personalize their day-of items. I am going to be taking you behind the design and into my process to see how we brought these pieces to life.

I begin all of my projects with a mood board. In the image below, you will see how we envisioned the overall color palette, feel, and style of the day. I started from the color swatches, provided by Kelcey, and the gorgeous green striped table linens. I knew that their original inspiration came from menus I had made previously, so I added those to the mood board as well. To top it off, I included three options of coastal vintage artwork that we could use across their day-of items.

Before I ever get into the design phase of a project, these mood boards really allow me to explore the overall concept of a design and ensure we are on the right track. From here, we are able to dive into the actual artwork creation.

Once we enter the design phase, I take in all the nitty gritty details through my intake forms. This allows me to get all of the contents of the menus, access the guest list, and the corresponding table assignments for those guests. As we work through designs, my digital mockups allow us to get a lifelike understanding of the design before going to print.

From mood board, to mockup, to reality, it was a joy to bring these details to life! Starting with their menus above, I pulled this incredible coastal artwork by William Merritt Chase. It captured their seaside venue while also pulling in some warmth of their color palette. Each guest was greeted at their seat with one of these menus, alongside custom scallop shell place cards. We laser cut these shells to shape and guest’s names were written in a custom dusty blue ink calligraphy. To top it all off, each shell had a pearl detail!

Drawing from the same vintage artwork, we used this as a backdrop for their seating chart. I pulled the same design elements into their table numbers and bar menu - adorned with a vintage sailboat illustration. It was so fun to see all these pieces come together on the big day!
